Dothan

Building

Downtown Dothan developed as the city’s historic commercial and civic center following the arrival of the railroad in the late nineteenth century. The proposed Main Street district includes much of the original downtown commercial core centered around Main Street, Foster Street, Troy Street, and adjacent corridors. The district contains historic commercial storefronts, civic buildings, entertainment venues, and institutional structures representing multiple periods of twentieth-century development. The Downtown Dothan/Main Street Commercial District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes several individually listed historic resources and Alabama Register properties. Key historic and cultural anchors include the Dothan Opera House, historic commercial buildings, and civic facilities that continue to support downtown activity and redevelopment efforts.
