Veterans Day
Birmingham, Alabama holds a significant place in history as the founding city of the Veterans Day Parade. Raymond Weeks, a visionary leader, spearheaded the movement to transform Armistice Day into Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring all those who have served. In 1947, Weeks orchestrated and guided the inaugural parade, laying the foundation for a longstanding tradition. Since then, Birmingham has proudly hosted the National Veterans Day Parade every November 11th, symbolizing gratitude and respect for our veterans. Recognizing the immense importance of this day, President Eisenhower solidified its significance in 1954 by signing legislation that officially designated November 11th as Veterans Day, a cherished occasion observed nationwide.
Fiesta Birmingham
Celebrating Hispanic culture for over two decades, Fiesta Birmingham is Alabama’s largest Hispanic celebration. It is the ultimate family-friendly festival and caters to all ages with so many engaging activities. From captivating music performances on the main stage to storytelling sessions, wrestling exhibitions, and a diverse range of arts, including music, dance, performing arts, and visual arts, the event offers a vibrant blend of cultural education, authentic Latin cuisine, children's activities, soccer, and community and health-related resources. Fiesta Birmingham is held at the historic Linn Park in Downtown Birmingham on September 30, 2023.
Magic City Classic
The Magic City Classic, the nation's premier historically black college and university (HBCU) football game, takes center stage at Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University go head-to-head annually, with the victor potentially securing a spot in the SWAC Championship. Starting in 1924, the two teams have met a total of 87 times. Alongside the intense game, the Classic Kickoff, Magic City Classic Parade, Tailgate Party, and the iconic halftime show featuring the Mighty Marching Hornets and the Marching Maroon and White create a festive atmosphere that celebrates the rich traditions and vibrant spirit of HBCU culture.
Birmingham Greek Festival
The Greek Festival is a mouthwatering extravaganza, Birmingham's oldest and most exciting cultural event! Step into a world of love and tradition as the city's Greek community showcases its culinary prowess, serving up homemade Greek cuisine with the freshest ingredients that will make your taste buds do a happy dance. Bob Syke’s Barbecue And Blues Festival
Bob Sykes Bar B Q, a beloved local tradition since 1957, has been a family-owned gem for generations. Starting as an ice cream and hamburger stand in Birmingham's Central Park area, founders Bob and Maxine Sykes perfected their famous barbecue and special sauce, and their commitment to excellence has been passed down to their son, Van Sykes, who now imparts his knowledge to grandson Jason Jewell. This iconic eatery not only serves up mouthwatering barbecue but also hosts an annual festival, featuring award-winning blues musicians, family-friendly activities, and talented vendors and artists. Best of all, the festival which is usually held in April supports local charities each year, making it a win-win for everyone involved.
PrideFest
Central Alabama Pride in Birmingham has celebrated nearly five decades of Pride. The highlight of their week-long series of events during the first week of June is PrideFest, an all-day and evening gathering that brings together the LGBT community, friends, and family. With food, music, and live entertainment, PrideFest is the largest Pride event in the state. Over the years, Pride in Birmingham has grown exponentially, expanding to a 10+ day celebration known as Pridefest. This extended celebration encompasses various activities throughout the area. Furthermore, Central Alabama Pride has formed a coalition with other Pride organizations in Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Troy, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Mobile Pride.
