Communities Are Transforming Their Downtowns

Across Alabama, communities are transforming their downtowns through vision, collaboration, and a commitment to creating places where people and businesses can thrive. Explore the stories behind that progress—from entrepreneurs bringing new ideas to life and historic buildings finding new purpose to community projects creating renewed energy and opportunity.

Project Grants

Strategic Investments Create Lasting Impact

Since 2024, Main Street Alabama has invested directly in designated communities through our Project Grant Program, funding projects that strengthen our districts, encourage public investment, and improve the places where people live, work, and gather.

These funds are dedicated to projects that leave a lasting mark on a community. Designated Main Street programs have used grant funding to complete placemaking initiatives, public space improvements, streetscape enhancements, building rehabilitation projects, and other investments that support long-term revitalization.

The Project Grant Program reflects Main Street Alabama's commitment to providing more than technical assistance. By investing directly in these projects, we help our designated districts turn plans into action and create lasting improvements that strengthen Alabama's historic commercial districts.

Storytelling Through Local Lenses

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

In 2026, Main Street Alabama launched our Storytelling Project, an initiative that expanded the visual storytelling capacity of Alabama's designated Main Street districts while investing in the state's creative professionals. The project was led by Main Street Alabama in partnership with Alabama Tourism and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

The initiative demonstrates our commitment to supporting local talent. Rather than relying on a single photographer or agency, the project created paid opportunities for photographers from across Alabama, ensuring the images captured the distinct character of each place while keeping the investment within the state.

Professional photography is one of the most valuable marketing tools for a Main Street program. Strong images help communities tell their stories, attract visitors, promote investment opportunities, celebrate local businesses, and present a polished, consistent image across every platform. Be on the lookout for these amazing photos on Mainstreetalabama.org, Sweethometowns.com, and on individual designated program websites and social media.

Design can be the catalyst for investment.

In 2026, Main Street Alabama launched the Design Assistance Program, partnering with an on-contract architect to create exterior concept drawings that help property owners, local Main Street programs, and community leaders visualize potential improvements before construction begins.

Whether reimagining a storefront, restoring historic architectural features, or enhancing windows and entrances, these renderings provide a clear picture of what is possible while respecting the character of each downtown.

The initiative reflects Main Street Alabama's commitment to providing practical, high-impact resources that help designated communities preserve their historic character while encouraging thoughtful reinvestment in downtown Alabama.

Sweet Home Towns Initiative

Every Downtown Has a Story Worth Discovering

In 2024, Main Street Alabama launched Sweet Home Towns, a statewide initiative designed to encourage exploration of Alabama's designated Main Street districts while celebrating the people, places, and experiences that make each downtown unique.

The initiative connects designated communities across the state into a trail experience, inviting both residents and visitors to discover Alabama through its historic downtowns. From the mountains of north Alabama to the Gulf Coast, and all the lovely places in between, Sweet Home Towns showcases the local restaurants, shops, public art, historic landmarks, outdoor recreation, events, and cultural attractions that define each community.

Sweet Home Towns reflects Main Street Alabama's belief that every downtown has something worth experiencing. By making it easier to explore Alabama's historic commercial districts, the initiative supports local economies, celebrates community identity, and invites more people to experience the places that make Sweet Home Alabama unique.

Small Box Shops

We Help Local Entrepreneurs Take the First Leap

Main Street Alabama's Small Box Shop program is creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs to launch businesses, test ideas, and build a customer base before investing in a permanent storefront. Made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the initiative transforms shipping containers into attractive, turnkey retail spaces that serve as small business incubators in Alabama's Main Street districts.

The impact extends far beyond the individual business owner. Small Box Shops activate underused spaces, introduce new retail experiences, increase foot traffic, and boost the energy of downtown districts.

Local Main Street programs manage the Small Box Shop, recruit entrepreneurs, and provide mentorship and business support, creating an environment where small businesses can grow and succeed.

More than a retail space, the Small Box Shop program invests in local entrepreneurs and the future of Alabama's Main Street districts. By lowering barriers to business ownership and creating a path to permanent investment, the initiative helps grow locally owned businesses, fill vacant storefronts, and strengthen the economic vitality of designated Main Street districts for years to come.

AL Spark

Growing Small Businesses Strengthened Downtowns

In 2024, Main Street Alabama launched AL Spark, an initiative designed to help small businesses grow and thrive in designated Main Street districts. Supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the program combined education, marketing assistance, technical support, and growth funding.

AL Spark created a progression of opportunities for entrepreneurs. Through LiveWire, business owners completed flexible, self-paced training, while Illuminate provided marketing grants to 210 businesses.

Bright Ideas, a statewide pitch competition, challenged participants to develop strategic plans for growth. Businesses advanced through local and regional competitions, receiving funding, coaching, and technical assistance before finalists presented their ideas at the statewide competition.

Main Street Alabama plans to apply to the SBA to continue this successful program.
