The quaint city of Heflin, Alabama, is the perfect destination for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors and some of the best features of the state of Alabama. Located just minutes away from the highest point in the state, Mt. Cheaha, it’s also not far away from the crisp, clear waters of the Tallapoosa River. Heflin is a part of our Main Street program and made many new and exciting developments.  

Heflin Main Street Takes a Green Approach Supporting the Outdoors

The City of Heflin, Alabama in Northeastern Cleburne County is the gateway into the Appalachian mountains and home to a variety of outdoor activities, including seven trails, making it Alabama’s Trail Town. Heflin Main Street recognizes its natural beauty and works with local businesses and organizations to enhance and intensify the existing features.

With Main Street Alabama’s Four Point Approach, local assets come together to build a sustainable and complete community revitalization effort. To date, 54 net new jobs have been created in Downtown Heflin and 12 net new businesses have moved into the area or relocated to the area as a direct result of Heflin Main Street’s efforts.

City of Heflin Parks & Recreation Department

The Parks & Rec Department is responsible for all youth sports programs, fitness and exercise programs, camps, and facility management. Cahulga Creek Park is adjacent to the Talladega National Forest management area and has a fishing pier, picnic pavilion, and boat ramp and its biggest attraction is probably the Lake Point Disc Golf Course. McIntyre Park is located next to the football field. This is where the annual Salute to America Celebration is held each July. Deacon Park is next to the Community Arts Center and features a playground, basketball courts, a walking track, and a pavilion.

Mt. Cheaha & Other Outdoor Attractions Near Heflin 

You can’t mention northeast Alabama without mentioning Mt. Cheaha, Alabama’s highest point, and Cheaha Resort State Park, the oldest in the state and one of the most unique in the nation. “Chaha” means “high place” in the Muskogee language and is 2,407 feet above sea level. Recently renovated, visitors can pack a day full of fun with rock climbing, swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, and more.

Alabama’s Trail Town

With so many trails throughout Heflin, it’s no secret how it has gotten the name of “Alabama’s Trail Town.” Trails range from bird watching to the newest trail, the Heflin Spur of the Pinhoti National Recreational Trail. Trails lead you through the woods, through Cahulga Creek Park, and even all the way through Downtown Heflin.

The seven trails include:

  • Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail: Cleburne County is home to five stops on this famous trail: Cahulga Creek, Cheaha State Park, Cheaha State Park - Bald Rock Trail, Coleman Lake: Talladega National Forest, Talladega Mountain National Natural Resource Center

  • Appalachian Highlands Scenic Byway: Runs through four counties in northeast Alabama, including straight through Downtown Heflin

  • Chief Ladiga Trail: This 33-mile paved asphalt trail was created as a part of the Rails-to-Trails initiative and connects Cleburne and Calhoun Counties

  • Lloyd Owens Canoe Trail: Located on the Tallapoosa River, the Lloyd Owens Canoe Trail is perfect for canoers of all skill levels

  • North Alabama Wine Trail: The North Alabama Wine Trail features several wineries throughout the southern Appalachian Mountains, including Heflin’s High Country Cellars

  • The Pinhoti Trail, Heflin Spur: The newest trail of the seven, this 3.5-mile trail brings hikers right into Downtown Heflin

  • Talladega Scenic Drive: This 29-mile drive brings you some of the best views of Alabama. The drive begins on Route 281 near Heflin and continues up Mt. Cheaha

  • Warden Station Horse Camp: Warden Station Horse Camp features 30 miles of trails through the Talladega National Forest and 45 campsites
