Laura Mendez

Laura MendezLaura joined Main Street Alabama in October 2017. She has worked for years in the private, government and nonprofit sectors to improve communities throughout Alabama. She brings experience in historic preservation, nonprofit management, community development, city planning, marketing and real estate.

Laura began her career with DesignAlabama, a state-wide nonprofit group that promotes design education and awareness. She edited a nationally-recognized design journal and organized community design workshops throughout the state.

She later worked as Senior Planner for the City of Miami Beach Planning Department where she served as senior staff to the Historic Preservation and Design Review Boards. After returning to her hometown of Birmingham in 2003, she became the Community Development Specialist for the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham where she worked to establish a regional Main Street program and received extensive training in the Main Street Four-Point Approach®.

Since the 1990s, Laura has maintained an active Alabama real estate license and, since 2007, has been the Qualifying Broker for her own real estate company.

She holds a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). She lives in Hoover with her husband and two children.
