Monroeville invites you to write your own chapter in the Literary Capital of Alabama. Nestled in the Red Hills of Alabama, Monroeville is recognized as the hometown of a prodigious number of Alabama writers, including Harper Lee and Truman Capote. The courtroom of the Monroe County Courthouse Museum is a National Historic Landmark and stop along the Alabama Civil Rights Trail, and a must-see for any fan of To Kill a Mockingbird. Walk just around the corner to find the Monroe County Public Library, formerly the LaSalle Hotel where Gregory Peck stayed when visiting Monroeville to prepare for his Academy Award-winning role Atticus Finch.

Visitors year-round may experience Monroeville's vibrant shopping and dining opportunities in the historic downtown district. Monroeville Main Street's Second Saturdays bring locals out for monthly cultural activities and games on the Square to promote shopping and dining locally. Walking tours are available throughout the year, and visitors should not miss the Literary Capital Bronze Sculpture Trail, which tells the story of all of Monroe County's famous writers. The Johnna Bush murals Home is Where My Friend Is and Literary Giants, as well as the downtown stops on smART Moves on the Monroe County Mural Trail further tell the story of Monroeville's diverse community. Visitors in the spring may look forward to a vibrant arts season, kicking off in February with the Quilt Show in the Museum, continuing the first weekend of March with the Monroeville Literary Festival, and concluding in April and May with the world-famous local production of the play To Kill a Mockingbird

Monroeville was selected as a Main Street Alabama designated community on June 2, 2014.
